Residency Program

Message from Dr. Smith

Samuel D. Smith, M.D.
Program Director

Welcome to the Web page of the UAMS Department of Surgery. We hope that these pages will give you helpful information about our Department and our Residency Programs.

We offer a five year ACGME-accredited Surgery residency program as well as ACGME accredited residencies in Vascular Surgery and Pediatric Surgery. Our General Surgery residency program was recently approved for permanent expansion by the ACGME, and we now accept five categorical surgery PGY-1 residents per year. We also provide preliminary surgery training for residents entering the surgical specialties.

Our program has excellent exposure to all principal components of Surgery, as defined by the American Board of Surgery. Our thirty full-time faculty members represent all areas of surgical practice and are strongly committed to resident education.  In addition, our private practice volunteer faculty provides an excellent surgical educational opportunity in the private practice setting.

Our program is based at four integrated institutions and one affiliated institution, all of which have demonstrated a strong commitment to resident education.  These institutions include a world-class university hospital, a tertiary care Veteran’s Administration Medical Center on campus, the two largest private hospitals in the Little Rock area and the sixth-largest children’s hospital in the U.S.

We are most proud of our graduating residents. Historically one half of our graduates have entered fellowships or academic practice, and one-half have entered private practice. Over the past several years we have placed residents in fellowships in every surgical sub-specialty.  I invite you to carefully explore our program, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
