Surgery Conference Schedule

Surgery Morbidity and Mortality Conference
7:00 A.M. Tuesday, weekly

Surgery Morbidity and Mortality (M & M) is a formal review of the case portfolio of the UAMS Surgical Resident, with emphasis on deaths, complications and controversial cases. Cases are presented by the accountable operating resident. Discussion is moderated by Dr. Smith with input from Surgical faculty. Radiology and Pathology faculty members participate in the case discussions as well. This formal conference is attended by all Surgical faculty, Surgical residents and medical students rotating in the Department of Surgery.

Surgery Grand Rounds

Surgery grand rounds is a formal educational offering that encompasses review of clinical surgical concepts, review of current literature and other formal educational offerings of interest to both the UAMS and Arkansas surgical community. This conference is given by attending surgeons and guest speakers.

Resident Basic Science and Clinical Science Conference
9:00 A.M. each Tuesday

Basic Science and Clinical Science Conference is a weekly review of current basic science topics applicable to the clinical practice of Surgery. Current journal articles and recent text writings are reviewed by conference participants, and learning is assessed by multiple choice examination at the completion of each block. This conference series is arranged so that a complete review of the applicable subjects is completed every two years. This conference is presented by selected faculty members. All residents in the UAMS Department of Surgery attend this conference.

BHMC - LR Case Conference
5:15 P.M. every 4th Monday of the month
Baptist Health Medical Center - Little Rock, Gilbreath Conference Center, Room #20

BHMC - LR case conference is a monthly general surgery conference where cases from the BHMC - LR surgery service are discussed. This is attended by the Little Rock private surgery community as well as the UAMS Department of Surgery faculty and residents.

Journal Club
7:00 P.M. last Wednesday, monthly
Local Restaurants - TBA
Journal Club topics coincide with the Basic Science curriculum. Residents review 4-5 articles per month - two of historical significance and three on current issues. Chief residents, with faculty assistance, find and assign the articles to 4-5 residents who are then responsible for reviewing the article and preparing Power Point slides to present to the group. Journal Club is held the last Wednesday of the month at a local restaurant (location to change monthly).
