The UAMS Surgical Residency exists to train competent, compassionate and responsible general surgeons and to provide prerequisite surgical experience to physicians who will continue training in the surgical specialties. Our graduates are prepared for community or academic practice and are recognized as both medical and community leaders.
The UAMS Department of Surgery trains five categorical General Surgery residents for each of 5 training academic years. All PGY-1 positions are offered exclusively through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). We accept applications exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Our deadline for receipt of a complete application is November 30, 2008.
We also provide preliminary surgery positions for the UAMS residency programs in Urology and Neurosurgery. Applicants for these positions should apply directly to the appropriate specialty department at UAMS. If you match into a UAMS Subspecialty program, you will be provided information by that program regarding a designated preliminary position at UAMS. Occasionally, we have available non-designated preliminary PGY-1 or designated preliminary PGY-1 positions for residents continuing their education in another program. These PGY-1 positions are also offered through the NRMP, and may be offered in the post-match period if unfilled in the match. Medical students or physicians who wish to be considered for positions that remain unfilled after the NRMP match should contact us directly by mail or e-mail.
